The North East Local Health Integration Network is tracking the progression of the flu across the province. The influenza is a contagious respiratory infection that is caused by a virus.
The NE LHIN says last year was a relatively mild year for the flu, but they’re expecting a bump up of cases in the coming weeks. Each year over 12,000 Canadians are hospitalized as a result of getting the flu with about 3,500 passing away due to complications.
Children, seniors, pregnant women, indigenous people and those with underlying health conditions are at a higher risk than others. To help protect yourself from the flu you should wash your hands frequently using hot water and soap and consider getting a flu shot from your local health unit.
