More Passing Lanes Needed for Highway 11

The Temiskaming Shores and Area Chamber of Commerce is pressing the government and law enforcement to improve safety measures along Highway 11.

Northern Ontario Business reports that a fatal collision on Highway 11 North back in November has renewed interest in this topic. A joint meeting between the MTO, OPP and other parties involved will look at adding more passing lanes in the 160 kilometer stretch between North Bay and Temiskaming Shores. Even though 11 is a Trans-Canada Highway, the MTO says due to the lack of traffic on the road it would be impossible to have four lanes the whole way.

During the winter Highway 11 has become the road of choice for many long-haul truck drivers to avoid frequent snowfalls on the Highway 17 corridor along Lake Superior. The OPP says many accidents are weather related or have to do with impatient drivers who may be speeding to pass other vehicles. With no passenger rail service up North, when the highway closes it forces drivers to be delayed for several hours as there’s not always a detour available.
