Bribery Bill Passes Second Reading

The Private Members Bill that would make it illegal to ask for or accept a bribe has passed second reading.

Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson introduced the bill after an allegation that the Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault wanted something in return to represent the Liberals in Sudbury.

Bisson says it doesn’t make sense that it would be illegal to offer a bribe to someone, but not to accept it. He feels like this bill is putting the Liberals between a rock and a hard place. The MPP says no government would vote in favour of allowing candidates to accept bribes, but at the same time they can’t allow a Minister who has done just that to keep their current position.

As of right now it’s illegal to offer a bribe, but not to accept one, but if this bill passes that could all change.
